Organisations are human, non linear and self organising

Freedom, Fun and Passion

by Dr Paul Thomas 19. July 2007
You would be forgiven if you thought I was talking about your hobby or holiday in the above title. I'm not, for I'm referring to the organisation you work in at the moment. No! Then it should be, if you want to be sustainable, innovative and present in the near future. Do your workers want to come to work? Do they feel excited about driving to work? If not then you must re-examin youself, your organisation and what you are doing not for this to happen. Should we be having fun in work?

Reading Paul's post, I believe organisations can be fun, passionate and creative places to work ... it just depends on the environment ... To share my experience, before leaving to come to Wales I worked for a research company in Sydney Australia called, The Leading Edge (TLE) ...

TLE was very different to any organisation I had worked for and they really valued, listend to and invested in their staff ... I'd love to see more organisations, esp. the ones I work for and the organisations I work with to embrace a similar philosophy ... so that more and more people feel more personally rewarded by what they do, valued by their organisation, and they actually have fun at work ....

For some insight into what TLE did to create a fun, passionate and free environment to work in I've uploaded an extract of interview conducted by 'ResearchTalk' with Derek Leddie, the founder and director of TLE: http://www.dnawales.co.uk/podcast/TLE-InvestinginTalent-2006.mp3

The full interview about Derek Leddie and TLE can be found at ResearchTalk - Weekly Show 11 (23rd October 2006):
