Excellent article, I concur with everything he says and loved the quote about the "empty desk" - reminds me of someone I used to work with....

The analogy with junior doctor recruitment is very apt, there was nothing wrong with the original system, but Modernising Medical Careers goes much deeper, not only changing the balance of power but also attempting to modernise the role in a way that impacts on consultant practice and could be at the detriment of teaching and research...of course it is the nature of the medical profession that they will continue with this anyway...
