The University of Glamorgan has long revered the works of Ricardo Semler and were delighted to welcome him to South Wales.
The DNA appellation was used purposely as a direct link to Ricardo Semler’s DNA Brazil thinking group. Indeed, DNA Wales claims that the architecture of complexity, as demonstrated by Ricardo Semler and SEMCO Ltd, will allow Welsh management to evolve and react quicker if they see their organisation as “human, non-linear and self-organising”. Furthermore, the DNA employs Semler’s innovative business management policies for corporate re-engineering by introducing organisations to the vocabulary and concepts of a Complex Adaptive System.
DNA Wales seeks to avoid the conventional stranglehold of tight forecasts and rigid control by providing managers with an alternative managerial perspective that allow them to achieve sustainable competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive environment. The agenda of the DNA recognises the challenge facing firms who are looking to survive in this environment and is therefore aligned with the Welsh Assembly’s Department for Enterprise, Innovation and Networks (DEIN). Indeed, the Assembly’s economic agenda set out in “Wales: a vibrant economy” created a path for organisations to follow and emphasised knowledge as a pre-requisite for an organisation successfully competing in the global business environment. To this end, with the aid of inspirational businessmen such as that of Ricardo Semler, the Network’s long term objectives of creating and perpetuating a Knowledge economy will provide a solid foundation for sustainable development in Wales.
